Running for Office: Pre-Candidacy Tips

Tip #1:  Allow the delegation to vote on ALL of the candidates for office. Here are some reasons why:
  • Ensure that your delegation fully supports your candidate.
  • Help candidates recognize that they represent their delegation.
  • Practice democracy within the delegation to translate it to the larger program.
  • Provide candidates with an opportunity to practice selling themselves to their peers
Tip #2:  Review all requirements and position descriptions with candidates. Here are some reasons why:
  • Make sure the office is what the delegate really wants to do.
  • Make sure that the delegate will not be disqualified for failing to meet general or position-specific requirements
Tip #3:  Set early deadlines for candidates to complete required applications. Here are some reasons why:
  • Allow yourself time to correct any mistakes that arise (i.e. no photo, poor photo, missing information, etc.).
  • Allow yourself time to approve all applications before the statewide deadlines (candidates can be disqualified because of an advisor's missed deadline!) .
Tip #4: Make sure your candidate is prepared for the possibility of not being elected. Here are some reasons why:
  • Strictly speaking, it's impossible for everyone to win. There are 31 elected officers and over 150 applications.
  • Make sure your candidate will have fun and value the experience regardless of the outcome.
