Secretariat Program

What is the Secretariat Program?


The Secretariat oversee and provide leadership to the California YMCA Model United Nations program participants. The Secretariat are responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of all youth in all committees, organizations, and social events. This includes facilitating conversations in and out of sessions, mentoring participants, being a positive role model, executing good safety and supervision practices, and abiding by the California YMCA Youth & Government code of conduct. The program has three tiers, each of which has different responsibilities and learning objectives.

Secretariat (ST1)


The ST1 are first years in the Secretariat Program. These Secretariat will serve alongside the ST2 (Senior Secretariat) in facilitating committees, activities, round tables, and activity sessions for the Model United Nations delegates.

During their first year, ST1 will develop and hone their skills as facilitators and leaders that they may have developed during the Model Legislature & Court Program in a new and different environment. ST1 also undergo initial training with the other Secretariat at Camp Roberts where ST1 will learn how to interact with middle schoolers, learn facilitation and group management skills, and learn more about the United Nations.  ST1, like all Secretariat, are participants (delegates) in a leadership development program and are not volunteering or working for California YMCA.

Qualifications

  • Be a current high school student in either grade 10, 11, or 12.
  • Possess professional demeanor, good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well with other staff, advisors, and program participants.
  • Ability to adequately observe MUN program participants and the ability to enforce safety standards and regulations.

Application Process

  • Applications are available on Reggo starting in November. The deadline for applying is the same as the registration deadline for T&E II/MLC.
  • Applicants will be interviewed at T&E II and notified at the end of T&E II.
  • The term of the Secretariat starts from the conclusion of the Model Legislature and Court until the conclusion of the Model United Nations Summit.

Senior Secretariat (ST2)


Each year, a number of Secretariat are selected to return to serve in the program in the second tier, as Senior Secretariat (ST2). Unlike new Secretariat, returning Secretariat already have experience serving in the program and have been asked to return to continue to expand their leadership skills learned as an ST1.

In preparation for conferences, Senior Secretariat are required to attend leadership training to prepare and expand their role as Secretariat. The ST2 not only brings a body of knowledge to the program, but also help to mentor and assist new Secretariat (ST1). ST2, like all Secretariat, are participants (delegates) in a leadership development program and are not volunteering or working for California YMCA.

Qualifications

  • Applications are available on Reggo starting in November. The deadline for applying is the same as the registration deadline for T&E II/MLC.
  • Applicants will be interviewed at T&E II and notified at the end of T&E II.
  • The term of the Secretariat starts from the conclusion of the Model Legislature and Court until the conclusion of the Model United Nations Summit.

Chief Secretariat (ST3)


Each year, several Secretariat are selected to serve as Chief Secretariat during their senior year in high school. In the 2014-2015 year, there will be four (4) Chief Secretariat. These Chief Secretariat function as liaisons between their fellow secretariat within each of the program tracks, program volunteers, and CA YMCA staff; supervise and coordinate all responsibilities within their tracks; and work closely with the CA YMCA staff, Assistant Directors, and Program Volunteers to identify opportunities in the program and seek prompt, effective, and workable solutions.

In preparation for undertaking the responsibilities outlined above, Chief Secretariat are required to attend several Rising Chief Secretariat webinars, arrive early to conferences, and also participate in other leadership trainings. The Chief Secretariat have a major role in the recruitment, interview, and selection process of other Secretariat. Chief Secretariat, just like all Secretariat, are participants (delegates) in a leadership development program and are not volunteering or working for California YMCA.

  • Applicants will be interviewed at T&E I and notified at the conclusion of T&E I.
  • The term of the Chief Secretariat starts from the conclusion of T&E I until the conclusion of the Model United Nations Summit.
